Kosuma bars do not contain any artificial preservatives, additives, or stabilizers. They are ideally stored in a cool, dry, environment allowing for a 4 month shelf life. For best results, keep your bars in the refrigerator. They can also be stored in the freezer, and will maintain their integrity upon thawing.
WHY ARE KOSUMA BARS A HEALTHY CHOICE?
Our bars are rich in macronutrients including protein, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and fibre to keep you nourished and satisfied throughout the day. Our high quality ingredients also provide vitamins and minerals to ensure well being. We don’t bake our bars. Whenever possible, our ingredients are raw, so you get as many nutrients as possible.
Our two sources of protein – whey and rice – provide a complete spectrum of amino acids. Our whey protein comes from New Zealand where the cows are free range, grass fed, and free of rBST (synthetic growth hormone). It does not contain soy or ﬁllers. Our brown rice protein is raw and comes from sprouted, non-gmo, organic brown rice. It is the only brown rice protein with a complete amino acid proﬁle, and is rich in essential vitamins and minerals including thiamin, riboﬂavin, niacin, phosphorus, iron and potassium. It has an amino acid proﬁle with an approximate 98% correlation to human milk and an approximate 97% correlation to whey.
Unlike simple carbs, complex carbs – nuts, seeds and whole grains such as oats – take longer to digest and are packed with ﬁbre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Complex carbs do not give you a sugar spike and allow you to stay satisfied for longer periods of time.
We do not use trans-fatty acids or hydrogenated oils in our bars. The nuts and seeds offer heart healthy, beneficial omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Omega-3s are considered essential fatty acids because they cannot be produced by the body and must be obtained solely from dietary sources. They are particularly abundant in the ﬂax seeds found in all flavours of our bars. Omega-3s have been known to help lower the risk of heart disease mainly by lowering triglycerides and countering inﬂammation; they are commonly deficient among North Americans. Good fats help your body to absorb more nutrients from foods, and keep you satiated and sustained for longer periods of time.
Tapioca syrup is a subtle natural sweetener that comes from the cassava or yucca vegetable root. Cassava, a sustainable crop, is the third largest source of carbohydrates in the world and exists in many varieties in South America, India, and Asia. Tapioca syrup is gluten and GMO free. It is a fantastic alternative to corn syrup, sugar, honey, maple syrup and molasses. Aside from being a healthful sweetener replacement, tapioca contains antioxidants and aids in digestion.
Our bars do not contain wheat. We use a 100% wheat free oat from Avena Foods, the largest supplier of its kind in North America. Our oats are pure and not subjected to cross contamination allowing them to be free from wheat, barley, and rye.
Salt is vital for life. However, the commercial table and cooking salts on the market are chemically cleaned and highly processed eliminating essential minerals. They also contain anti-clumping additives.
We use Himalayan salt from the Himalayas in Pakistan. Pink or white in colour, it is often referred to as “white gold”. Himalayan salt contains the same 84 essential minerals found in the human body.
We use 74% organic Peruvian dark chocolate. Research shows that dark chocolate and dark cocoa provide cell-protecting antioxidants and can help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. In fact, dark chocolate contains higher concentrations of antioxidants per ounce than blueberries, green tea, or red wine. Our organic and fair-traded dark chocolate is handcrafted by Habitual Chocolate, a local artisanal chocolate maker.
